Mental health is often neglected or a low priority in many developing nations. There is a role for the Church to step into the breach in these situations and offer much needed care for those suffering. However, Christians have traditionally viewed psychiatry and psychiatrists with suspicion. At times the mentally ill have been labelled as being “demon possessed” or perhaps “spiritually weak”. All kinds of inhumane acts have been performed on the mentally unwell in the past in the name of religion and the “church”. Though we are not as cruel in the modern world, there is still a lot of ignorance, wrong theology and stigma when it comes to mental health.

What are some of the reasons that many suffer with mental health issues? How can we change some of the negative views about mental health and those who struggle with it? We hope that this webinar will be an opportunity to discuss some of these issues further.

Prof Kuruvilla George, a Christian psychiatrist and coordinator of the Christian Mental Health Fellowship, will open the field of mental health and illness to integrative understanding that brings medical science and Christianity together. This webinar is brought to you by MST & Eastern’s Centre for Theology and Psychology.
