This workshop will explore what popular mindfulness is and offer a Christian alternative to this practice. It will:
- raise questions about the appropriateness of popular mindfulness, compare and contrast Buddhist meditation, Christian Contemplative traditions, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
- integrate scripture, spiritual disciplines and mindfulness, with a focus on being connected to God 24/7, accepting difficult thoughts and feelings, and creative contemplative applications to faith.
- give participants an opportunity to experience Christ Centred Mindfulness activities.
Dr Katherine Thompson
Presenter
Katherine is a trained clinical researcher (psychology/neuroscience), and clinical social worker (accredited mental health social worker). She has completed theological study before serving with Global Interaction for 18 months in Central Asia. She has worked in mental health research and currently works in private practice, with a focus on young people aged 12-25 years, and people involved in mission and ministry. Katherine’s interest in integrate faith and psychological theory and practice has led her to author the book Christ-Centred Mindfulness: Connection to self and God. Katherine is also Honorary Senior Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne.
