A Christian Perspective on Dementia

As Christians, how can we provide better care for the older people in our community?
Despite our best efforts, age catches up on us. But it’s when aging comes with challenges like dementia that it starts to be a real problem. And with people living longer, dementia is becoming more prevalent than ever before. The number of people aged 65 and over has tripled in the past 50 years, and is forecast to triple again in the next 50. With the shifting demographics older people will overtake infants as being at greatest risk of disease and disability.
So, what happens when someone we know becomes diagnosed with dementia? There’s a very good chance someone you know and love will suffer from it. But what’s the best way to respond? And how can we best care for them as Christians?
This workshop seeks to address these important questions by exploring how we, as Christians, can understand and respond to those living with dementia in our families and communities.
Prof. Kuruvilla George will be presenting this workshop, drawing on his decades of experience working in aged persons mental health.
Presenting alongside him will be Mrs Wendy Goh, who is a clinician with the Aged Care Assessment Service, Eastern Health, and Mr Benjy Soosai, a retired mental health nurse and service manager.
Together, they’ll present a complete view of dementia care, covering:
- What dementia is from a clinical perspective
- How we can respond as Christians
- What services are available for dementia sufferers
- How sufferers can access these services (and how you can help them)
- Case studies and examples of faith centred dementia care
Main Presenter: Prof Kuruvilla George (KG)
Kuruvilla George (KG) is the Associate Director at CTP. He completed his medical education in India and his post-graduation as a psychiatrist in the UK. He currently lives in Melbourne Australia and recently retired as the Director of Medical Services at Peter James Centre and Wantirna Health and Clinical Director of Aged Person’s Mental Health and ECT for Eastern Health. KG was also a Clinical Professor at Deakin University and Clinical Associate Professor at Monash University. He served as the deputy chief psychiatrist for the state of Victoria from 2002 to 2012.
