Moral Injury: Meaning, Measurement, Management
Presented by Lindsay Carey
Wednesday 22nd of July, 7:30PM-9:00PM (AEST)
While the term ‘Moral Injury’ was conceived in 1994, it wasn’t recognised by the American Psychiatric Association until 2025.
31 years later…
And yet, it’s already changing the way psychologists, counsellors, chaplains and more are approaching PTSD and trauma.
This webinar is built on the years of hard work of Dr Lindsay Carey, army chaplain and a leading researcher on the topic of Moral Injury.
Across an hour and a half, Lindsay Carey will provide a foundational understanding of Moral Injury, and teach skills you can use to identify and manage Moral Injury.
Whether you’re a mental health professional or a pastoral worker, this webinar will give you the tools to identify moral injury and start helping people affected by it.
Learn What Moral Injury is and How You Can Treat It
Moral injury is a form of biopsychosocial-spiritual harm, incurred from committing, witnessing, or being subject to actions that violate one’s moral code.
Think of it like moral cognitive dissonance. A disconnect between what someone has done or witnessed, and what they believe is morally right.
- Maybe it’s a soldier following carrying out orders that accidentally harm civilians…
- A nurse unable to treat everyone properly during the Covid pandemic…
- Or a Christian, feeling conflicted and betrayed by the actions of their leaders…
While previously these would have all been lumped in with PTSD, Moral Injury provides a new framework that helps to address these kinds of trauma properly and create effective rehabilitation strategies.
