Paid Workshop

Eco-Anxiety, Climate Change and Technology

How to Live with Hope When the World Seems Hopeless

Saturday 8th of August, 10:00AM-12:00PM (AEST)

Register Online

A 2022 survey of nearly 19,000 young Australians found more than 80% of 16 to 25 year olds are worried about climate change.

Four years on and it doesn’t seem like the climate is getting much better, and if anything, war, the ever-increasing cost of living, and AI’s environmental impact are only making people’s anxiety worse.

It’s called…

Eco-Anxiety

And if you’ve ever felt helpless or distressed about the state of the environment, you may have experienced it yourself, along with potentially millions of others globally.

But while it looks like eco-anxiety may be here to stay, it doesn’t mean things are hopeless.

In this hybrid workshop, you’ll discover the causes of eco-anxiety, the role of Digital Technology in its spread, and how rediscovering old methods of Christian contemplative tradition might help us to live with hope in this age of anxiety.

Discover Eco-Anxiety and Technology's Role in Causing It

The role the internet and new technology plays in the spread of eco-anxiety and other mental health problems is becoming increasingly obvious.

In this workshop, Andrew Shepherd also provides a model for thinking how individuals and communities might respond to the challenges of eco anxiety, device addiction, social media and more.

You’ll learn about and discuss eco-anxiety, it’s causes, and how technology and device addiction play a part in its spread both in our own lives and our communities.

Learn Ancient Techniques for Living with Hope

Christian contemplative tradition, also known as ‘attending’, is a traditional approach to faith that invites us to cultivate interior silence and peace in communion with God.

You’ll learn how these techniques can assist with living in an age of anxiety and provide ways to find peace, hope, and comfort through your faith and relationship with God.

Join In-Person or Online

For the first time we’re able to run a hybrid workshop, allowing you to join the session online if you can’t make it in person.

Simply join via Microsoft Teams on the day to experience the workshop live.

Of course, we highly recommend coming in person if you can. Digital still has limitations, and you will be able to engage with the speaker and other participants better in-person.

Main Presenter: Andrew Shepherd

Dr Andrew Shepherd is a Senior Lecturer in Theology and Public Issues at the University of Otago. His working life has alternated between academic teaching roles and leadership responsibilities in Christian and non-profit organisations. After his initial degree in English Literature and History he completed post-graduate studies in theology.
